Now that EMV chips are being 'launched' in the US (despite existing elsewhere for some time now), there's been a lot of renewed interest on the subject of the technology - specifically as a matter of keeping credit card details secured, being encrypted with PIN access, as opposed to relying on a simple swipe. As a general matter (whether relating directly to payment cards or not), is EMV as a technology as big of a deal as the media is making about it? Do you see it having any significant application outside of payment cards as an IT security strategy?
It's old technology, the US is just late to implement. For payments:PROS: Can't duplicate them, lowering risk of identity theft and losses throughout the sales chain. Since consumers ultimately pay the price (higher product & service costs, stock value), reduced fraud has many benefits.CONS: All new cards issued still have the mag stripe, and will for many years to come. So the cards can still be cloned and used at retailers that don't support chip cards.TIP: Criminals will go to the path of least resistance; past fraud is not an indicator of future fraud. All retailers should protect themselves. The potential value outside of payments might relate to dynamic updating. For payments, the card is put into the terminal and left until message says to remove it. With mag stripe, communication is asynchronous- sends info out. With chip, it's bi-sychronous; the chip and the issuer 'talk' to each other.
The issuer can dynamically update the card, including based upon buying habits. For example, it could suddenly require the user to create a pin number, even where none existed before. It would be a stretch, but is there a security application such as accessing location or something that could benefit? It would require a hardware change because like payments, most devices are just 'asynchronous readers' of some sort. I can see how highly sensitive areas might benefit.but is a physical card with a chip better then biometrics? I don't think so. Was relying on information told to me, but maybe it's simply technical misunderstanding or miscommunication on my part?
The chip contains data that is 'prompted' by the issuer. So, the prompts change over time, requesting different data? I'll update when I find the specifics. The security on chip vs mag stripe is completely different though. Anyone can readily get data off a stripe, just like on hotel cards that use them.
But the chip has encrypted data and it's a complex secure process of mutual communication to process a chip transaction.good resource articleshttp://support.verifone.com/verifone/devnet/magIC/EMV%20Delivery/06Online%20Dynamic%20Authentication.pdfhttp://www.smartcardalliance.org/smart-cards-faq/. I'm sure there's a two-way communication between the reader and the card, but I think if the communcation protocols between the card reader and thecard chip change, the card issuer has to send out a new card.From:. 3Dmerchant mailto:[email protected]:.

There was a time that magnetic strip was seen as highly demanding not being able to be cracked. Anyone claiming being hacked was pre-assumed to be a liar. We know better now as how easy skimming is. The new clothes of the emperor the EMV-chip, will it be easy to be cracked? These days not much leaked to the bad guys.
But: there are more ways to crack than just cloning a card. The payment system is a chain of a lot things, there is most often some soft point to attackers. It makes no to be used outside payments.
